Gambling Disorder

*The First Officially Recognized Behavioral Addiction. The first disorder to be included as a non-substance behavioral addiction in the DSM-5; previously referred to as pathological gambling

  • Have you lost time from work or school due to your gambling?

  • Have you ever felt the need to bet more and more money – until your last dollar is gone?

  • Have you ever borrowed money, stolen or sold something to finance your gambling?

  • Have you ever been untruthful about the extent of your gambling, or hid it from others?

  • Have you ever tried to stop or cut back on how much or how often you gamble?

  • Have you ever thought you might have a gambling problem, or been told that you might? 


Internet Gaming Disorder
*Also included in the DSM-5 under conditions for further study

  • Do you have an Avatar?

  • Do you enjoy your life in the game more than in your reality?

  • In real life, do you know many of the people you regularly game with?

  • Do you game to escape your reality or relieve negative feelings such as anxiety, loneliness, guilt or sadness?

  • Are the terms First-person shooter (FPS), Third-person shooter (TPS), Massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), Massively multiplayer online game (MMOG), persistent multiplayer universe game, Person versus Person (PvP), Real-time Strategy (RTS) all part of your vernacular?

Texting and Email Problem Usage

  • Do you email and text even when doing so will cause both social and interpersonal problems?

  • Do you continue to email and text knowing you are placing yourself and others in physically dangerous situations?

  • Has your email and texting usage caused you to miss deadlines or arrive late for appointments?

  • Do you feel a sense of anxiousness if you are unable to access your emails or texts?

  • Do you become angry or irritable or if you do not receive a timely response to an email or text?

Compulsive Shopping & Spending / Addictive-Compulsive Shoplifting & Stealing 
  • Do you often buy things you don’t want because they are on sale?

  • Do you believe having more money would solve most of your problems?                        

  • Do you often spend more than your budgeted amount or more than you have planned?

  • Do you purchase items impulsively, knowing you don't need them?

  • Do you find yourself ignoring phone calls or bills because you want to avoid collection agents?

  • Do you experience a high or euphoria when shopping?

  • ·Are you experiencing financial trouble due to your shopping or spending?

  • Do you buy items in bulk or multiples of the same item?

  • Do you have feelings of entitlement to get “something for nothing”?

  • Have you continued to shoplift or steal despite having been confronted or arrested?

  • Do you have persistent feelings of life being unfair?

  • Have you chosen to engage in work rather than socialize when you were not under any type of deadline?

  • Are you unable to delegate work believing others are incapable of getting the work done correctly?

  • Have you missed personal or family events in order to stay late at the office?

  • Do you prefer to be at work rather than home or out with your family, friends, significant other?

  • Do you feel you are the only person who cares about the quality of work being produced?

Other Behavioral Addictions
  • Problematic Exercise – when working out and taking care of oneself becomes an unhealthy obsession

  • Food Addiction – when one’s preoccupation with food becomes all consuming

  • Tanning Addiction -  when powering down the laptop to get outside and get some sunshine takes a dangerous turn

  • Internet Addiction – when your reality in most aspects is virtual; employment, social outings, relationships
